The Village of Grayslake Police Department has long been recognized for its commitment to community service. The Village employs 32 full-time police officers and 15 non-sworn staff members that are dedicated to providing the most comprehensive protection, crime prevention, and social service programs to the residents of Grayslake. The Village Police Department operates an Enhanced Community 9-1-1 network. Squad cars are linked to the Illinois State Police computer system via Mobile Data Terminals (MDT's). The Police Department is fully accredited
through the National Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The Village of Grayslake and the Grayslake Police Department continue to seek new ways to provide residents with the best service in Lake County and northern Illinois.
While Grayslake has historically experienced a low volume of major index crimes, the Police Department has remained committed to an extensive crime prevention program that focuses on community-based policing strategies and youth programs. The following services are provided as a part of the Grayslake Community Policing:
- Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program. Educates fifth grade students of the dangers associated with substance abuse.
- School Liaison Program. Provides officer support in the high schools for assistance in student relations, crime prevention, educational seminars, and to provide appropriate community role models for high school students.
- Directed Traffic Patrol. A special program that provides targeted speed enforcement on local, residential streets.
- Weapons Disposal Program. The Village has a weapons disposal program that allows residents to safely dispose of their firearms. The intent of this program is to reduce the number of firearms accidents that occur in the home.
- Social Services Program. The Village of Grayslake has partnered with the Community Youth Network to provide social counseling to residents. Officers refer cases as they encounter families in need of these services.
- Valuable Marking Program. The Village offers a valuable marking program to assist in deterring theft and to provide a mechanism to return stolen property to its rightful owners.
- Bicycle Patrol Unit. The Village of Grayslake has six officers trained and equipped to patrol bike trails, parades, business and residential areas with specially designed police mountain bikes. One goal of the bicycle patrol is to enhance and increase the contacts between the police and the residents and business owners of Grayslake.
- Vehicle Lock Outs. The Village's Community Service Officers will provide free assistance to residents
when they have locked themselves out of their vehicles.
- House Watch. Residents that are leaving town for extended periods may call the Village to sign-up for the House Watch Program. The Police Department will specifically patrol those residences enrolled in the program periodically during the time the resident is out of town.
- Explorer Program. The Village offers an Explorer program where young adults between the ages of 16-21 can participate in various policing activities and explore career opportunities in law enforcement. The explorers are involved with officers in activities such as policing of community events, traffic control, and community services.
- Bicycle Helmet Cost Share Program - The Village offers a Bicycle Helmet cost sharing program that provides financial assistance towards the purchase of a bicycle helmet for youth children in the community.
- Helping Hands Program - The Village offers a Helping Hands program where people in need may receive a voucher to purchase food or gas through donations from local community churches.
- Crime Prevention Program - The Crime Prevention program involves the Police Department targeting their efforts and certain programs at reducing and preventing crimes from occurring within the Village.
The Grayslake Police Department also provides additional special services to Grayslake residents and businesses:
- Strong ongoing commitment to youth programs.
- Periodic foot patrols in the Historic Downtown Business District.
- Frequent community presentations on safety issues, crime prevention, and violence in the workplace and other issues.
