In
March, 2007, the National Arbor Day Foundation recognized the Village of Grayslake
as a Tree City USA
for its community forestry program. It is the thirteenth year in a row Grayslake
has received this award.
“It is gratifying for the Village to be nationally recognized for its ongoing program of planting and caring for trees,” said Mayor Perry. “In addition to making our community more beautiful, trees add value to our homes and neighborhoods and improve the quality of life in Grayslake.”
Tree City USA is a recognized standard of an effective community forestry program and the basis of such a program is a commitment of ongoing improvement and renewal.
According to John Rosenow, president of The National Arbor Day Foundation, “Proper tree planting and care today will ensure cleaner, healthier, more tree-filled cities and towns tomorrow.”
Tree City USA is sponsored in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. Several of the Village's successful environmental programs have again won recognition. Since 2000, through the Village's 50/50 Tree Reimbursement Program, over 850 new trees have been planted within the Village. This unique partnering program between the Village and Grayslake residents gives residents an opportunity to plant a new tree on their property or in the public parkway with the Village paying for half the cost.
The Lawn Mower Replacement Rebate Program gives residents an opportunity to receive funding when they replace their gas lawn mowers for an electric or manual mower. In 2007, 30 residents took advantage of this unique program by purchasing an electric or manual powered lawn mower.
The Screening/Buffering Grant Program provides financial assistance to Grayslake residents for the screening and buffering of single-family lots.
